Silas Burt enlisted as a Private in Company H of the Fourth Michigan Volunteer Infantry on February 20, 1862, for 3 years of service. He was on detached service with Company H of the First Michigan Infantry, by order, July 2, 1864, Petersburg, Virginia. On October 20, 1864, Silas Burt died at Lincoln Hospital, Washington D.C. as a result of wounds that he had received in action at Poplar Church, Virginia, September 30, 1864.
