Thomas Elwood Copeland was a farmer, and the son of Benjamin & Martha Ann Hall Copeland. He had 5 sisters and 1 brother, and 5 half-brothers and 1 half-sister from his father's first marriage to Rebecca Parker.

Thomas' exact date of death and burial location are unknown at this time, but his death date is narrowed down to between 1910 and 1913. He passed sometime between 1910 when he was last listed on the U.S. census, and 1913 when he is listed on the marriage license of his daughter, Daisy Bell Copeland Tesh, as dead. "After Thomas E. died, Jakey lost it and went to the Tuscaloosa Insane Asylum. The girls were scattered. Daisy went to the orphanage; Bessie went to live with the Anderson family in Whitakers as a nanny, and Burnie went to work on a tugboat."
