MANISTIQUE - Robert L. Walters, 82, of 212 Pearl St., Manistique, died Nov. 5, 2004, at the Schoolcraft Medical Care Facility in Manistique.

He was born Aug. 18, 1922, in Mackinaw City, Mich., the son of Leonard and Ruth (Chapman) Walters and attended the Holy Rosary Academy in Bay City, Mich.
On Aug. 27, 1949, he married Aspasia "Espi" Babladelis in Manistique. She preceded him in death on Jan. 4, 1991.

During World War II Bob served as a master sergeant in the Army's 101st Airborne Division, taking part in the invasion of Normandy and receiving the Gold Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Purple Heart medal. Upon discharge from the Army Bob settled in Manistique, attended the Police Academy in Louisville, Ken. He served as a Manistique City Police officer until 1962, when he and Espi purchased the Harbor Bar, which they owned and operated until retirement in 1981.

Bob was a member of the St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church of Manistique. He was a founding member of the Manistique Yacht Club and a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. He was commodore of the Manistique Marina since 1957 and served as the Manistique Harbor Master until 1981. He and Bill Bowman established BILLYBOB'S Boat Landing and Marina in 1979. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Michigan Sheriffs Association, Schoolcraft County V.F.W. Post 4420, D.A.V. Chapter 26 of Manistique and a life member of the Manistique Elks Lodge 632. He was the Lions Club "Man of the Year" in 1959.

He is survived by: his sons, Leonard Walters of Bradenton, Fla., Michael (Lori) Walters of Phoenix, Ariz., and Robert (Bonnie) Walters of Manistique; daughters, Pamela (Roger) Pease of Gahanna, Ohio, and Kim (Mike) Burnis and Cyndi (Mark) Hoholik of Manistique; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brothers, Richard (Helen) Walters of Manistique, Jon Walters and Steven (Jeanie) Walters of Milwaukee, Wis., and Dale Francis (Celeste) Walters of Merrill, Wis.; sisters, Mary Ann Rhynard and Sally Paradise of Manistique, Carol Kocker of Muskego, Wis., Patricia (Ken) Brown of Charles City, Va., and Jane Wolfe and Jean (Louie) Stoviak of Milwaukee, Wis.; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents he was preceded in death by his brothers, Paul, James and David and Arthur Walters.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the Messier-Broullire Funeral Home in Manistique, with veterans memorial service at 6 p.m. Funeral services will follow at 7 p.m. with Deacon Gilbert Sablack officiating. There will be a reception at the Manistique Elks Lodge after the funeral service. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Fairview Cemetery at Manistique.

Memorials may be directed to the Schoolcraft Medical Care Facility or the Manistique Area Schools' Foundation.
