Mark Daniel McCarthy, 82, a resident of Sebring, Fla., died Wednesday, June 14, 2006 in Erie at the home of his grandson, Brent Sperry. He was born February 21, 1924 in Erie, the son of the late Daniel and Esther Conley McCarthy. Mark graduated from Strong Vincent High School in 1943. He went on to graduate from the Merchant Marine Academy, Fort Trumbull, New London, Conn., in 1945 and was commissioned as an officer. He served overseas in the Merchant Marines during WW II. He was awarded the Merchant Marine Emblem, the Atlantic War Zone Bar and the Mediterranean-Middle East War Zone Bar. During the 1950s, he worked as the chief power engineer at Ruberoid in Erie. He went to work for W. R. Grace in the 1960s as a chemical salesman, and lived in the Louisville, Ky. area. He retired in 1985 and moved to Florida permanently in 1994. He was a member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church of Sebring. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 69, Avon Park, Fla., the VFW of Sebring and the American Merchant Marine Veterans organization. He loved his family dearly and really enjoyed all of his grandchildren. He spent most of his time working in his yard and fixing things for himself and others. He will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor - he always had a joke to share. Mark and his wife loved to travel and did so extensively. Besides his parents, he was preceded by five brothers, Robert, Gerard, James, Patrick and Matthew McCarthy; and two sisters, Mary Ellen and Rose Irma McCarthy. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Elizabeth (Betty) Bixby McCarthy; two daughters, Kathleen Roschy and her husband, Bill, who Mark considered a son, of Falconer, N.Y. and Sebring, Betsy McCarthy of Erie; and two sons, Robert McCarthy and his wife, Kathy, of Erie, and Mark McCarthy and his wife, Janet, of Loveland, Ohio. He is also survived by a brother, John McCarthy, and his wife, Marie, of Erie; a sister, Catherine Barren, of Worthington, Ohio; and a sister-in-law, Mary McCarthy, of Erie. Also grandchildren, Matthew Roschy, Mark Roschy and his wife, Elana, Bryan Sperry and wife, Margi, Lisa Konkol and husband, Paul, Brent Sperry, Timothy McCarthy, Saundra McCarthy, Jeffrey McCarthy, Daniel McCarthy, Oliver McCarthy, and Erin McCarthy.
