Prominent as Builder, Dies

Native of Appomattox County Had Been Norfolk Resident 21 Years


John Luther Abbitt, aged 64, prominent contractor, died at his home, 1051 Cambridge crescent, yesterday morning at 9:30 o'clock after a brief illness. He was a native of Appomattox County, and had been a resident of Norfolk for the past 21 years. He was the son of the late Charles A. and Mrs. D. LeGrand Abbitt.


Mr. Abbitt had been a contractor for the past 45 years and was a past president of the Builders and Contractors Exchange. He was a member of all the Masonic bodies in Charleston, W. Va., and was a past president of the Business Men's Bible Class here. He was prominent in religious activities, being a deacon in the First Baptist Church at the time of his death.


He is survived by his wife, Cornie White Abbitt; two daughters, Mrs. J. H. Kivlighan of Staunton, and Miss Cornelia F. Abbitt of Norfolk; two sons, J. Morton of Norfolk; two sons, J. Morton and Matt White Abbitt of Norfolk; three sisters, Mrs. M. C. Kelly, of Victoria; Mrs. H. E. Jones, on Dinwiddie County, and Mrs. J. H. Shelton, of Charleston, W. Va.; four brothers, W. A. Abbitt, of Charleston, W. Va.; J. H. and C. A. Abbitt, of Victoria, and W. B. Abbitt of New York and four grandchildren.


Funeral services will be conducted at the Cox Funeral Home, 631 Westover avenue, corner Manteo street, Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The Rev. Broadus A. Jones, pastor of the First Baptist Church, will officiate.


Burial will be in the family plot in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
