Robert Lewis was the oldest son and child of Ellis Lewis and Elizabeth Newlin Lewis. He married March 23, 1733, at the Concord Meeting, Chester Co., Pennsylvania, to Mary Pyle, 1714-1782, daughter of William Pyle, 1685-1734, and Olive Bennett, 1690-1732/33. Robert's other siblings were; Nathaniel Lewis, 1717-1757, Ellis Lewis, Jr.-grandfather of Chief Justice Ellis Lewis, III, of Pennsylvania, and Mary Lewis, 1716-1760, who married Joshua Pusey.
