James Garfield Beeler was born October 18, 1880 in Anderson County, Tennessee, and he was the son of Andrew Jackson Beeler (1855–1919) and his wife Sarafina "Sarah" (Graves) Beeler (1859–1944).

He was married about 1909 to Mary Jane Morgan (1889–1958), the daughter of Samuel David Morgan (1854–1931) and his wife Susan (Painter) Morgan (1861–1928).

A machinist for L&N Railroad Shops and living at 325 Antioch Road, Nashville, he was 59 years old and married when he died at home of cancer on May 18, 1940. Burial was the next day in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Jasper.
