Robert E. Connors, 69
WORCESTER - Robert E. Connors, 69, died July 16, 2015, at his home surrounded by family.
He is survived by his wife of thirty-five years, Carolyn Delude; his son Andrew of San Francisco; his daughter Stephanie and her husband Brian T. Mahoney of Newton, MA; his brother Joseph Connors of Harwich, MA and his loving in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his parents Joseph and Virginia (Hughes) Connors.
Professor Connors joined the faculty of Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1976 and remained a member of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry until his death. A valued colleague, he enjoyed research and teaching graduate and undergraduate students in the area of physical chemistry. Among the awards Dr. Connors most valued are his many MQP Advisor Awards, the Kinnicut Professorship and his selection in 2011 as a top 100 Irish Education honoree. In recognition of Dr. Connors' contribution, WPI has established an annual award in his name to recognize student excellence in physical chemistry.
Professor Connors was an avid New England sports fan, a music enthusiast, especially of Bob Dylan, and a weekend fisherman. A loving husband, father, brother, brother-in-law and uncle, Dr. Connors enjoyed his family life, especially time spent in Narragansett, RI. He will be remembered for his love of science, his kind and patient manner, and his wonderful, irreverent sense of humor.
Calling hours are Monday, July 20, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester. The funeral will be Tuesday, July 21, from the funeral home with a Mass at 10:30 a.m. in St. John's Church, 40 Temple St., Worcester. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dr. Robert E. Connors' name to Dana Farber, Dr. Reardon, Neuro-Oncolgy Research, 450 Brookline Ave., Boston, MA, 02115.
