Allen Douglas Berry Jr was born on February 6, 1923 in Nashville, Tennessee, the third of four children born to Allen Douglas Berry and Agnes (Vance) Berry. He was a grandson of the late Reverend Dr James I Vance and Mary (Currell) Vance and was a direct descendent of Tennessee's Governor William Trousdale.

He graduated from the Wallace University School in Nashville and attended Vanderbilt University. He also served in the US Navy as a flight instructor at Pensacola, Florida during World War II.

Allen was married on January 4, 1947 in Fort Worth, Texas to Patsy Ann "Pat" (Stamper) Berry (1928-2012), the daughter of James William Stamper and Irene (Patterson) Stamper.

He continued his family's tradition in Nashville since 1834 of involvement in the wholesale drug industry, when he joined the Nashville office (formerly Berry, Demoville & Company) of the McKesson and Robbins Drug Company, where he rose to the level of manager. In 1958 he founded Berry Wholesale Drug Company in Nashville, where he served as President until his retirement in 1986.

Under his guidance, Berry Wholesale was at the cutting edge of computer technology in the drug industry, a tribute to Allen's foresight. He received many awards and accolades during his long career, including the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy's Dean's Award, the Eli Lilly and Company Award for 100 Years of Service, the Middle Tennessee Society of Hospital Pharmacy Award, and an Honorary Associate degree from the Vanderbilt School of Management.

He was very active in the National Wholesale Drug Association where he served on the Operations Committee from 1977 to 1979, and as Chairman in 1979. He was also active in the Southern Drug Association as well as the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce, where he was elected to the Board of Governors in 1966, '67 and '68. And he was a longtime member of the Nashville Rotary Club. Allen was also a former deacon and lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church and belonged to the Belle Meade Country Club.

Allen enjoyed traveling, driving convertibles, physical fitness (especially running), photography, his family, and caring for his farm in Williamson County. In all of his endeavors, he was known for his perennially positive outlook on life, his kindness, his integrity, and his ability to tackle and complete difficult tasks.

A resident of Franklin, he was 92 years old when he passed away on July 19, 2015 after a brief illness.

He was preceded in death by his wife, and by his three siblings, Mary Currell (Berry) Oliver, William Wells Berry and James I Vance Berry, while survivors included three sons and their wives and eight grandchildren.
