Johnnie was living with his family when he enlisted in the Marines 13 July 1942, at a recruiting office in Jackson, Mississippi, when he was 17 years old.
He served during World War II and the Korean War and was serving at Camp HM Smith in HI, when he re- enlisted 13 January 1962.
SSgt Smith went to Vietnam and was assigned to India Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. The battalion was participating in Operation Hastings in the vicinity of a ridge line and River Valley when the Marines encountered hostile forces 10 kilometers west northwest of the Cam Lo Village. SSgt Smith died of gunshot wounds to the body from hostile rifle fire and the battalion lost 14 Marines and 1 Corpsman during the fighting.
Tour of duty unknown.
SSgt Smith and his wife Mary N Smith had been mutually separately since 1957 and she relinquish the control of his remains to his parents. They had no children.
