1st Lt. James was the navigator on B-24J #42-73435, serving with the 10th Air Force, 7th Bombardment Group, 9th Bombardment Squadron. On April 5, 1944 his plane was one of a group of three on a strike mission against the rail line between Rangoon Burma and Bangkok Siam. They had dropped two bombs on their first bomb run when hit by ground fire. The plane hit the ground and exploded. Three men were able to bail out shortly before the crash and became prisoners of war. Alexander and seven others were killed.

Because remains recovered from the wreckage could not be individually identified, the eight men are interred in a group burial.
