Robert H. Flinchbaugh YORK-Robert H. Flinchbaugh, 80, died Sunday, November 16, 2003 at York Hospital. Born February 5, 1923, in Red Lion, a son of the late Robert C. and Ethel I. (Wise) Flinchbaugh, he was a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, from which he retired after 40 years of service from the downtown office. He was fondly known as “the Whistling Mailman.” He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, where he served as past President of the Church Council, past President of the St. James Seniors Organization, member of the Married Couples' Sunday School Class, and Sunday School teacher for 45 years. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, serving in the 114th Infantry Regiment, and was a recipient of both the Purple Heart and Bronze Star Medals. He was a member of the West York VFW #8951; B.P.O.E. #213; Shiloh American Legion #0791; Postal Workers' Union Branch #509; a life member of the Shiloh Fire Company; past President of AARP, West York Chapter #1578; and volunteered at Our Daily Bread. Mr. Flinchbaugh is survived by his wife, Dorothy I. (Fake) Flinchbaugh of York. The couple celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary on October 24. He is also survived by a daughter, Joyce E. Klinefelter, and her husband B. Charles Klinefelter, of York; two granddaughters, Kimberly Goodling and her husband Steve Goodling, of York, and Angela Hash and her husband Brad Hash of Montana; and two great-granddaughters, Amanda Goodling & Karly Goodling of York. A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. James Lutheran Church, 25 N. Adams St., York, with his pastor, Rev. George W. Fitch, Jr. officiating. Visitation will follow the service in the church parlor. Baumeister, Orcutt & Small Mortuaries, South Queen at Jackson Street, is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Saint James Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 25 North Adams Street, York, PA 17404; or to Our Daily Bread, 331 South George Street, York, PA 17403.
