Harold was born in Portland, Ottawa County, Michigan, the oldest son of Charles Aussicker and Jennie (Bazan). He attended school in Grand Rapids, graduating in 1934. He joined the Army on June 2, 1942 to serve his country for four years during World War II in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. When the war ended, he went back home and worked on his parents' blueberry farm called Gold Barn Blueberry Farm, which they started in Holland, Michigan, in 1944. For the next six decades he lived his life there, worked the farm, and never married. He loved his farm and, though considered somewhat of an eccentric by some, was a respected and beloved uncle and friend. He was also a proud member of the Michigan Blueberry Growers Association. In 1973, Harold hired a young man named Jeff DeVries as a hand-picker. He came to appreciate the young man's hard work and determination, and with no family of his own, came to look at Jeff as the son he never had. When Jeff married Julie Kamphuis in 1991, their family became Harold's family, too. He was like a Grandpa to Jeff and Julie's little girls, Jennie & Jill. He enjoyed watching the History Channel, This Old House, or anything else he could learn something from. He also enjoyed watching sports, and listening to Paul Harvey on the radio, too. He also enjoyed taking part in the Labor Day Walk across the Mackinac Bridge each year. Unquestionably a good man, he never cursed and was nice to everyone he met. Most of all, he loved being a part of Jeff's family, and they will carry on his blueberry farm tradition. He died peacefully at Haven Park Christian Nursing Home. He is survived by two brothers, Carl (Josephine) Aussicker of Jenison, and Jack (Jan) Aussicker of Zeeland; caretakers Jeff (Julie) DeVries of Holland; and many nephews, nieces, and cousins who will cherish his memory.
