Rita Makovicka, 39, of Lincoln, died Thursday, February 22, 2001, at her home. Services were held at 10 a.m. Monday at Firefighters Union Hall in Lincoln. Rosary services were at 7 p.m. Monday at Metz Mortuary in York and the funeral was at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in York with Rev. Leo Sieker officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Miss Makovicka was born September 2, 1961, to Francis and Frances (Mazour) Makovicka in York. She graduated from York High School in 1979. She was a gifted athlete. The basketball teams were 1977 and 1979 state champions. She also had accomplishments in softball, volleyball and track.

Rita graduated from the University of Wyoming, where she received a basketball scholarship and was an All-American. She became assistant volleyball coach at Western Illinois University and later taught and coached at Harvard High School.

She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Rita was a firefighter and emergency medical technician for the Lincoln Fire Department. She was named the Firefighter of the Year in 1999. She was awarded the Unit Performance Award in 1997 and 2000. She was named Female Athlete of the Century by the York News-Times. Rita chaired the fire department's minority recruitment and was preparing herself for a promotion to captain.

Survivors include her mother; five brothers, George, Ray, Leon, Ron and Robert; and four sisters, Jean, Jane, Mary and Theresa.

Preceding her in death were her father; two brothers, Bernard and Leo; and one sister, Celia.

Miss Makovicka was a granddaughter of the late Joe J. and Alice Mazour, a niece of Mary Ann Biltoft, and a cousin of Roger Biltoft, all of Nelson.
