Jane Gordon Stirling was the youngest daughter of James and Mary Stirling nee Wands.

The family story was that Jane and her husband William Fleming were considering emigrating to America where Jane's sister, Auntie Annie had already gone but were persuaded by cousins to come to New Zealand which they described as a land flowing with milk and honey. (Although the 1920 US Census indicates that Auntie Annie arrived in the United States in 1913 and lived in Pennsylvania. Her daughter followed in 1904 - the daughter had been living in Scotland with Jane Gordon Stirling and her grandmother Mary Wands Stirling, so the story perhaps refers to another relative.)

The Fleming's with three young daughters, Mary, Jean, and Elizabeth arrived in 1902 making Kaeo, Northland their base where according her daughter Jean they lived in a tent. Grandma (Jane Gordon Stirling Fleming) was desperately homesick and if they could have afforded it would have gone back home. After being brought watercress for a meal, Jane Gordon Stirling Fleming said 'I've come twelve thoosand miles to live in a cloth hoose and eat grass like a coo.'

They first moved to Hikuangi, then Kiripaka where William worked as a coal miner. After a time, they bought a small farm at the Whareora end of Harris Road. Their daughter Jean married Frank Hill and settled in the Whangarei area and Jean and Frank's son Stanley Hill farmed on Harris Road in Whareora.

William and Jane moved to Gisborne and William spent his last years working as a sexton at Makaraka Cemetery. Their youngest daughter Elizabeth had married Joseph John Jeffs who took over the position of Cemetery Sexton when William Fleming passed away.

Grandma (Jane Gordon Stirling Fleming) moved to Opotiki where her eldest daughter Mary Fleming Connelly lived, then at age 54 married Mr Emmett who predeceased her. She died at the age of 80 of coronary thrombosis which lasted about four hours, although she had suffered coronary sclerosis for years.
