As his wife and children were waiting to accompany him on an automobile ride, William DeBruyn, 30, of 1001 Caulfield Ave. SW ended his life by plunging a large knife into his heart shortly before 9 P.M. yesterday.Neither his wife nor the police were able to give any motive for the suicide. He had been in good health and spirits until he returned from work last night, his wife told Detective Charles Wolgemuth and Harvey VanKoughnet, when he appeared despondent while eating his evening meal.DeBruyn had been the manager of the A. & P. Tea Company store at 340 Bridge St NW for about three years. A daughter 4 and son 7 survive. The body was taken to Van't Hof Funeral home.
Officiating the funeral was William's uncle Dick DeBruyn.

DE BRUYN-William DeBruyn aged 30, of 1001 Caulfield S.W. passed away unexpectedly Wednesday evening. Surviving are the widow: a son William jr.: a daughter Barbara: parents Mr. and Mrs. Abraham DeBruyn; six brothers, Abraham jr., James, Cornelius, Richard, Louis, and Marvin; two sisters, Mrs. F. Steinbrecker and Ida DeBruyn. Funeral services Saturday at 2 o'clock at the Van'tHof Funeral Home. Burial Rosedale Memorial Park. Friends may view the body at the residence until Saturday noon.
William's family recount of the tragic event years later from his wife Luella was that William and her were arguing in the kitchen while their son and daughter were outside waiting in the car to go for a family ride. Luella says that William grabbed a butcher knife off the counter and threaten her before turning it on himself.
William's sister Clara and Ida recounted when the call came to the house that William had killed himself, their father Abraham buried his face in his hands and cried. According to Clara the funeral was conducted at the Van't Hoff Funeral Home by their Uncle Dick De Bruyn, a Netherland Reformed Church Lay Pastor. Clara recounts that their Uncle "preached their brother into hell." Clara later says that at the graveside their father Abraham laid across the grave of William and cried and Abraham's brother told him he needed to forget about William because he was damned for taking his life.
