Private, Company C, 18th Regiment, Texas Infantry, CSA

Son of Sarah D. Smyth and Green Berry Wallace. John Green Wallace came to the Republic of Texas with his parents and siblings before January 1846, when his father wrote a letter expressing the difficulties of raising cotton and getting it to market in "Shreveport, the nearest place of navigation." Green Wallace and family helped establish Pinetown, and Green served as Postmaster in 1852. John's uncle, George Washington Smyth, signed the Texas Declaration of Independence.

John Green Wallace, age 25, was enlisted April 7, 1862 at Rusk, Cherokee County, Texas, by W. B. Ochiltree for 3 years or the war. Much of the company was sick during November and December 1862, and John and his older brother, Edward S. Wallace, were listed on the Regimental Return for December 1862, at a Convalescent Camp. Other relatives in Company C included cousin William C. Wallace, who died at Camp Nelson on November 12, 1862, and Campbell Wallace, who died at Alton Military Prison, 1864. John and Edward's brother Andrew S. Wallace also died during the war, in 1862.

After the war John Wallace married (1) Margaret J. Jones on December 7, 1865, in Cherokee County, Texas. He married (2) Evie Gage on June 19, 1879, and (3) Martha Jane Phillips Bairfield on December 4, 1887, in Cherokee County, Texas.
