Ruth Ann Lawson Nix was born on April 8, 1934 in Canton, GA. She passed on October 30, 2014 in Canton, GA. Her father, John Gordon Lawson of Hickory Flat, farmer, famed beagle breeder and hunter, supported all her dreams. He taught her the value of hard work, the riches of poverty, and raised her to love Jesus. Her mother, Adena Henderson Lawson, homemaker, cake baker, and clothes maker, was devoted to Ruth, making great sacrifices so she could attend a city school and receive a robust education. This foundation in education served to guide the life of Ruth in various ways.
She is the widow of the late, Goss Ray Nix of Canton. He was Ruth’s biggest fan and lover. He taught her the joy of life in simple pleasures and was steadfast in serving her as Christ served the church.
She is survived by her sister, Joy Pope Mabry, of Kennesaw. She was Ruth’s friend, confidant, secret keeper, author and holder of the famous family chicken finger recipe. Ruth held Joy as a shining example of everything she wanted to be, to make her sister proud was one of Ruth’s guiding lights.
She is also survived by one son, Richard David Nix, Buffington. He anchored her life and without him life would have been a haze. Richard loved her with all her flaws and in him the concept of ceaseless love was portrayed to her. Her son made her extremely proud, the good pride of a mother, not the kind in the Bible that makes you bad.
Her grandchildren, Brad Nix, Marietta, Bryan Spencer Nix, Canton, were another source of great pride. She mothered them during life’s storms and taught them her own values for life and happiness. She found great hope in ensuring they received access to opportunities she was never afforded. She found great joy in their dedication to improving others, their community, and to making the world a better place. She knows that they will grieve however they must, but that they have beautiful families and good work to do and they should get busy doing it, the clock is ticking.
Her great grandchildren, Piper, Haddyn, Logan and Judson were a source of great joy and the treasures of a life well lived. She desires for them to love life and to always remember there is nothing worth sharing like the love that lets us share our name. Through great grandchildren, she saw the world as more full and beautiful.
Her nephews, niece, cousins, and many devoted colleagues and friends also survive Ruth. She loved them all and she knew they loved her. She desired they know how much value and depth they gave her life.
To her surviving students, she thanks you for sharing the art of education with her. Some of you are still wondering why she was so strict. She wanted you to be the best you could be, it was from a place of passion and love and if ever beyond that, she gives her sincerest apologies. But, she still urges you to stop making excuses and get on with making much of life.
