ROBERT EDWARD THOMAS, 91, peacefully passed away Friday evening, July 31, 2015 at Embracing Hospice, Cumming, Georgia with his wife and son by his side after a courageous fight with declining health over the past 16 months. He was born September 17, 1923 in King's Daughter's Hospital, Portsmouth, Virginia to the late Jesse Allen and Minerva Elizabeth Hopkins Thomas. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Abbie Eleanor Carter Thomas, 3 children and spouses: Carol Thomas Schultz, Charlotte, NC, Susan Thomas Elliott (Rev. James Lawrence Elliott), Valdosta, GA and Robert Edward Thomas, Jr. (Mary Michael (Micah) Brawley Thomas), Milton, GA; 9 grandchildren: Molly Virginia Schultz and Thomas Jacob Schultz, Charlotte, NC, Thomas Gus Elliott, Athens, GA, Alexander Callaway Elliott, Tuscaloosa, AL, Lawrence Carter Elliott, Macon, GA, Robert Edward (Ret) Thomas, III, Brawley York Thomas, Richmond Michael Thomas and Sayler Sullivan Thomas, all of Milton, GA. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Dolores Shockey Thomas, Philadelphia, PA; brother-in-law, Robert Hilton Oliver, Jr., Richmond, VA, nieces and nephews: Elizabeth Wright Carroll, Rebecca Wright Atack, James William Thomas, William John Thomas, Thomas Gwathmey (Chip) Wood, Laura Jean Wood Klutz, John Phinehas Wood, Robert Wayne Oliver, Gerald Steven Oliver, and William Timothy Oliver; dear friends Carl & Laura Lloyd and family, Chapel Hill, NC, Mae Newsome, Ohio and numerous extended family and friends.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sisters Wilma Thomas Wright Taylor, Jean Thomas Wood, brother Jesse Allen Thomas, Jr., brothers-in-law Arthur Wilson Wright, Phinehas Earle Wood, sister-in-law Laverne Carter Oliver, nephews John Thomas Wright, Robert Joseph Thomas, Andrew McQueen Carroll, and dear friends Arthur Dowell (A.D.) Newsome and Wallace, Thomas Melvin (Pug), Martha and Mary Lloyd.

He graduated from Cradock High in 1940 and began his lifelong career with the Seaboard Air Line Railroad in March 1941. He served in the U.S. Army Transportation Corps from March 1943 through January 1946 and was assigned to Statistics Branch Office of Chief of Transportation – European Theatre of Operations, March 1944 – October 1945. He attended the University of North Carolina on the GI Bill graduating in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, Major – Accounting and returned to the Seaboard Air Line where he held various clerical, management and official positions in Portsmouth & Richmond, VA, Hamlet & Raleigh, NC and Jacksonville, FL retiring in December 1982 from successor company CSX Corporation as Assistant Vice President – Audit. From 1984 – 1997 he served as Accountant and Business Manager for St. Andrew's Episcopal Day School.

He was a member of the Association of American Railroads – Accounting Division, Railroad Internal Audit Seminar Group & Audit Planning Committee, Institute of Internal Auditors (Charter Member NE Florida Chapter) where he served as President and on the Board of Governors, and the University of North Carolina Old Guard.

Bobby Thomas loved his family and friends, his UNC Tar Heels and a good meal. He will be dearly missed by all who ever met him, especially his grandchildren. He was a dear, gentle, sweet man who personified every quality of The Greatest Generation.

The Funeral service celebrating his remarkable life will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 8, 2015 at St. Aidan's Episcopal Church, 13560 Cogburn Rd, Alpharetta, GA with full military honors, The Reverend James L. Elliott officiating. Music will begin at 1:30 p.m. In accordance with his wishes, his body has been cremated with interment to follow at a later date. Memorials may be made to St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Jacksonville, FL or to your favorite church or school. Ingram Funeral Home, Cumming, GA is assisting the family with arrangements.
