Olympic Games Gold Medalist Athlete. He was a member of the United States Olympic Cycling Team that competed in the 1904 Olympic Games in St. Louis, Missouri. The team consisted of eighteen members, and because no other nation fielded a cycling team, they competed only against each other. Burton Downing won Gold Medals in two of the seven cycling events (the 2 mile race and the 25 mile marathon), three Silver Medals (the 1/4 mile, the 1/3 miles and the 1 mile races), and on Bronze Medal (the 1/2 mile race). His overall total of six medals topped the team, besting Marcus Hurley's five (four Golds and one Bronze). Later in life he became the president of a construction company and the president of a hotel company in New Jersey.
