In 1936, the family moved to Mississippi and Elly graduated from Moss Point High School.
She attended business college and went to work in the office of Westinghouse in San Francisco, where they made parts for the war effort.
She then lived in Alabama for a time and was married to Alva G. Strohm on Dec. 9, 1946, in Tacoma. They settled in Troy in 1955 at the Strohm family farm. In 1967 they moved to Moscow, and Elly went to work cooking at the Varsity Cafe, and in 1969, the Nobby Inn. She retired from there in 1988.
Elly enjoyed flower gardening, playing bingo and feeding the squirrels and birds, and enjoyed butterflies and her cats.
She was preceded in death by her husband in was also preceded in death by a daughter, Margaret Cann, in 1977; as well as a brother, Leo Mathiesen, in 2011.
