He became interested in music in his early years. In 1962 Sherrill moved to Nashville where he initially went to work for Sun Records, but later went to work at Epic Records. During his time there, he (along with Glenn Sutton) mixed country with pop music sounds in a sound that late became known as "the countrypolitan sound". Sherrill had his first big hit with David Houston and "Almost Persuaded" which spent nine weeks at #1 in 1965 and 1966. His most famous association was with Tammy Wynette and George Jones. In 1968 Sherrill co-wrote the popular hit "Stand By Your Man" with Wynette. He signed George Jones to a contract with Epic Records in 1971 and was his music producer until 1990. Sherrill, who was called "the little genius" by Jones, played a major role in some of his greatest hits. Another star he worked with was Charlie Rich and he helped produce the big hits "Behind Closed Doors" and "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World". Sherrill also worked with many stars like Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, and Elvis Costello.
