STAYNER SOLDIER
DIES OF WOUNDS
Mr. and mrs. John Martin, Stayner RR,3 have had word that their son, Pte. Norman R. martin,
died of wounds overseas November 22, He had been wounded friday, October 13, while serving in France or Belgium. He went to France on his 22nd birthday.
He enlisted November, 1942, trained at Sherbrooke, Que. Halifax and Petawawa, and went overseas in July 1944. Last month Pte. martin wrote to his parents that he was getting along fine in an English Hospital and said he expected to be home for Christmas.
The official message received by mr. and Mrs. Martin follows;
'Minister of National Defence deeply regrets to inform you that B118005 Private Norman Robert Martin has now been officially reported died of wounds reported as compound fracture left femur and ruptured urethra. Any further information becoming available will be forwarded as soon as received."
Letter from hospital
The following is part of a letter received from one of the boys on the staff at the hospital where Norman was a patient for five and a half weeks.
"Knowing your boy I felt I'd like to drop a line to you. I worked in the ward where Pte. Martin was and was with him at the last on Wednesday morning, Nov. 22..
He seemed quite bright after I'd fixed him up and shaved himself ans said that feels great. he was very quiet all say. I never realized the end was so near but at 3;30 p.m. he collapsed and was really ill and passed away at five twenty-five, Nov.22. Well, there weren't many Canadians left and he has gone to be with his comrades."
