---Bernadine was born to Louis and Eva (Parker) Winter at her parent's home in Newton Township on April 5, 1924. She has lived in Newton and Emmett Townships her entire life. She attended Dodge School, and then Lakeview High School where she graduated in 1942. She worked for a short time at Kellogg Company in Battle Creek (long enough to play on their softball team!) until she entered the Community Hospital School of Nursing. She graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1948. At the beginning of her training at Community she joined the WWII Cadet Nurse Corp to prepare to serve in WWII. The war ended before she would need to be called.
