Hyrum Senn Henderson, age 85, born in Magrath, Alberta, Canada, passed away peacefully at his home Tuesday, June 4, 2013.
Hy moved with his family, Oswald and Frieda Senn Henderson and eight brothers and sisters to the United States in 1948, living in Idaho for several years. He graduated from Sugar Salem High School. He received his Bachelor's Degree from Ricks College, then taught school in Shelley, Idaho in 1953-1954. He served in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper. While Hy was in the Army, he applied for citizenship and became a U.S. Citizen in 1955.
He attended BYU in 1956-57 and met Shirley Ann Reed, whom he married in August of 1957 in Mesa, Ariz. They lived in San Diego, Calif. for seven years, where their first three children were born and where he taught junior high school Special Education.
Later the family lived in California, Arizona, Washington, and Utah, settling in Providence about 39 years ago. Their last two children were born in Washington and in Logan.
Hyrum received his advanced degrees from BYU and taught in the fields of Special Education and Educational Psychology at University of Arizona at Flagstaff, Central Washington State University at Ellensburg, and Utah State University. He retired from teaching in 1993. After retiring, he continued to keep active by consulting, traveling and working with education research projects for several years.
Early in his college teaching career he and graduate student and close friend, Norman Erken, developed and published teaching materials both for regular and Special Education classroom use. These materials were fairly widely used throughout the country and were popular with many teachers. Hy formed close and lasting friendships with many of his students and colleagues.
Hy was respected as a man of honesty and integrity and had a sincere interest in others. He was active in the LDS Church and served in several auxiliaries. He served as an officiator in the Logan Temple for several years. He recently worked in the Family History program and on the history and temple work of his ancestral families.
His main hobby was gardening, and he had many prolific and beautiful gardens over the years. He was able to provide food and flowers for several friends and family members, not for charity, but as a way of sharing his life with them.
He was the last surviving member of his parents' family, but is survived by a sister-in-law and several nieces and nephews for whom he had great affection.
Hy is survived by his wife Shirley, five children: Jeanine Senn of Eagle Mountain; Joe of Ann Arbor; Mich.; Tom of Riverton, Wyo.; Jody (Greg) Kidman of Mendon; and Rosanne (Greg) Gittins of River Heights, 12 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He was particularly proud of his family and was loved in return. He will be greatly missed.
The family would like to thank Dr. Bruce Isaacson; Intermountain Hospice; and various cancer specialists in Logan and Ogden for his care and treatment in the past few weeks.
There will be viewings from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 9, and 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 10, at the LDS chapel at 464 N. 300 East, Providence. His funeral service will be 11 a.m., Monday, June 10, 2013, at the same location. The funeral will be conducted by the Fruitland Acres Ward of the River Heights Stake. He will be buried in the Providence City Cemetery.
