Carl Edwin Shawhan was born March 15th, 1941 in Boise, ID as an only child to Reuben & LaVerta (Cluster) Shawhan. He attended the College of Idaho where he met his wife Anita Kay Sample. They were married at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Boise on May 31st, 1964, then moved to Salt Lake City, UT where they lived for 12 years. Carl earned his masters degree at the University of Utah and dedicated his life to serving the needs of others, in particular handicapped and disadvantaged individuals. He strongly believed in preparing students for employment in the community and working with employers to accomplish this goal.

In Utah, he worked for Easter Seals, State Vocational Rehabilitation and was the Director of Columbus Community Center. Carl proudly hosted President Gerald Ford in 1974 as he toured the facility, which was the first of its kind in the nation. This unique center provided a high caliber of career training to a broad scope of people with different types of disabilities. It became a model for other centers. Carl was a frequent speaker on vocational rehabilitation. He received a national honor for his work.

In 1976, Carl moved his family to Urbandale, Iowa where he was the National Rehabilitation Job Development/Job Placement Specialist at Drake University. This Masters program promoted awareness, compassion, and built partnerships between the public and private sectors.

Carl spent the last 15 years of his professional career at the Iowa Department for the Blind as the Director Job Placement. He took pride in matching his clients with rewarding careers.

Carl enjoyed the outdoors, the mountains, hunting, fishing. Carl had a great sense of humor and loved sharing stories with family and friends. Above all, he adored spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren. In retirement, Carl and Anita enjoyed traveling to Europe, Mexico, and around the United States. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a trip to Hawaii. In addition to being an avid reader and gardener, Carl was an active member of the Urbandale Tree Board.

Carl is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Anita Kay (Sample) Shawhan; three children Kristi Carlson (Eric), David Shawhan (Colleen), Steven Shawhan (Jill); along with his four grandchildren Kieran Shawhan, Addison Shawhan, Liam Shawhan and Aaron Carlson; and step-grandson Treven Carlson.

The family extends special thanks to the doctors and nurses at Unity Point Methodist Hospital for their care and compassion during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Salvation Army or to DMARC Food Pantry.
