The son of Heinrich & Catharine (Rice) Hall, in 1860 he was a farmer living in Saville Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 10" tall with light hair and blue eyes. He married Susanna A. Hench November 26, 1863, in Saville Township and fathered Henry Luther (b. 03/25/65), Cloyd Logan (b. 09/09/66), Samuel Edwin (b. 07/17/68), Hedeshae Hunter "Dess" (b. 04/04/70 - married Loren Gustave Donner), William Clare (b. 08/23/72), Harry S. (b. 01/10/75), Anna Gertrude (b. 02/05/77), Harriet Ellen (b. 06/28/79 - married Charles O. Laird), Jacob Hench (b. 04/15/81), Franklin Pierce (b. 09/08/84), and Benjamin (b. 03/30/86).

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg August 30, 1864, mustered into federal service there September 2 as a private with Co. B, 202nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company August 3, 1865.

By 1879, he was living with his family in Nebraska but a few years later moved to Iowa.
