Westville – John George Cassidy, Victoria Street, Westville, passed away in his 87th year, on November 2, 2008, in the Aberdeen Hospital, with his family at his side. He was a son of the late George and Emma (White) Cassidy, Saint John, N.B. He served in the Royal Canadian Navy for four years during the Second World War. He worked in the Drummond and McBean Mines for many years. He was a member of the Draegermen Corp. and assisted at the Springhill Bump in 1956 and again in 1958 at the Springhill Explosion. After leaving the mines, John was employed at Tibbett’s Paints in Trenton for 22 years. He was an avid stamp collector all his life, loved to watch and feed the birds in his backyard, and enjoyed gardening. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Margaret (Fitzgerald); son, John Cassidy (Lillian), Stellarton; two grandchildren, Genesta Grant (Robert), Park Falls; and Jeffery Cassidy, Calgary, Alta. He is also survived by a brother, Raymond Cassidy (Jean), New Glasgow; brother-in-law, Bob Rankin, Westville; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he was predeceased by brothers, Edward, Westville, and Arthur, Saint. John. Visitations will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Eagles Funeral Home, Westville. His funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday from the Church of the Holy Name, Westville with Father Raymond Huntley officiating. Burial will be in the Holy Name Cemetery. No flowers by request. Donations may be made to a charity of choice.
