The sixth of six brothers, "Gramps" was born and raised in Spencer. Leaving home by train in 1906, he arrived near San Francisco just hours after the 1906 earthquake there. Returning as far as Denver, he worked in explosives manufacturing, then in Wyoming as a ranch hand before being employed by the Union Pacific Railroad. He worked in the UP from about 1912 through his retirement in December 1955. Starting there in the machine shop, his last posting was as the Conductor aboard the "City of San Francisco".
