Officer Ahearn was able to strike some blows with his nightstick but was then shot by the offender before he could pull his own revolver. A massive manhunt ensued, including using a bloodhound, and within the week a man (Raffo) was arrested and confessed to the crime. He avoided the death penalty after an appeal but was to die in prison four years later at the hands of another inmate.A New Rochelle Police Officer, P.O.
