Irene ‘Rene’ Griffith Gouge, age 68, of Veed Garland Road in Spruce Pine went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 9, 2015 at the Memorial Campus of Mission Hospitals in Asheville after a short, but courageous battle with cancer.
Born on April 24, 1947 in Mitchell County, she was the daughter of the late Ralph and Willie Boone Griffith. Rene was a ’people’ person, making many friends during the years that she worked at Sky City in Spruce Pine. She was a friend to everyone she knew, especially children and animals. She owned and operated “Irene’s Home Day Care” for many years. Her greatest joy and the accomplishment that she was most proud of was being a wonderful and loving mother to her beloved son. Rene was a member of the Liberty Hill Baptist Church.
Left to cherish her memories are her husband ; Jeff Gouge of Spruce Pine; her son; Joshua Gouge of Columbia, SC; her sisters; Mildred (Meg) Griffith of Spruce Pine; Edna Boone and husband, Ray of Micaville; Joan Cox and husband, Burton of Spruce Pine; her father-in-law and mother-in-law; Phillip and Jean Gouge of Blue Rock; several nieces and nephews.
