Henry Appeldorn, Pioneer of Community Called By Death Friday


Henry Appeldorn, Sr, pioneer Paullina resident, died very suddenly last week Friday at the age of nearly 7S years. Mr Appeldorn came to this community about 15 years ago, and was well and favorably known by nearly every resident. His sudden death was a shock to his family and to all. Deceased retired from active farm life In 1900, and since has been a citizen of Paullina. The obituary follows.

1851 - Henry Appeldorn Sr. - 1929

Henry Appeldorn was born In Holstein, Germany on April 22, 1851. He came to the United States in 1870, settling at Blue Island, Ill.

On June 15, 1875 he was united In marriage to Miss Dorothea Voight. After living in Chicago for several years they moved lo a farm near Washington Heights, Ill., where they lived till 1884.

In 1884 he came with his family, to town, and settled on a farm south of Paullina. where he lived till 1900, when he moved to Paulllna.

He died on Friday, March 1, 1920, having reached the age of 77 years, 10 months and 9 days.

He leaves to mourn his loss his wife and twelve children. Mrs. Mary Rohwer of Paullina, Mrs. Anna Rohwer of Paullina. Mrs. Wilhelmina Orthmann of Sutherland. William Appeldorn of Paullina, Mrs. Martha Schildts of Holland, Minn., Henry Appeldorn of Pipestone, Minn., Herman Appeldorn of Pipestone Minn., Mrs. Emma Kleunder of Pipestone, Minn., Gustav Appeldorn of Pipestone, Minn., Mrs. Dorothea Holck of Pipestone, Minn., George Appeldorn of Paullina and Rudolph Appeldorn of Primghar.

Besides these, there are the wives and husbands of his sons and daughters, and his children's children to the fourth generation, including 67 grandchildren and 28 great grand-children, and a host of friends who mourn his passing.

Henry Appeldorn was a man of sterling character who won the esteem of bis fellow citizens by the honesty of his dealings and his sincerity of purpose. He made his place in life by hard work and was blessed with a long life and a hearty old ago in which to enjoy the fruits of his labors.

He was a friend to all: but above all he was a father to his children and a grandfather to his grandchildren He was never happier than when surrounded by his family at the yearly family reunion. The family circle is now broken, but those who remain look forward to the coming reunion in the heavenly home.

The funeral service was held on Wednesday afternoon, March 6th in the Presbyterian church and was conducted by Rev. H.P. Morgan and Rev. E. L. Maraneck, pastor of the Presbyterian church at Jefferson, Ia. and a grand son-in-law of the decased. The pall bearers were his six sons, William, Henry, Herman, Gustav, George and Ralph.
