Dorothea Volgt Appeldorn was one of twelve children born to Huns and Maria Voigt on September 20, 1855, in Rehm, Holstein, Germany. When she was fourteen years of age she was confirmed In the Christian faith in the home church in Holstein Germany.

In 1870 when she was fifteen years of age her parents brought her with the family to the United States, where they settled near Chicago, IIIinois. It was there she grew to young womanhood.

She was united in marriage with Henry Appeldorn on June 15, 1873 at Chicago, Illinois. In 1884 they moved to the farm in Union Twp., southwest of Paullina, which was their home for twenty-five years. Here they raised their twelve children all of whom survive her.

In 1900 she and her husband moved to the home in Paullina that has been her residence to the present time. The two of them returned to Holstein, Germany, in 1911 to visit their remaining relatives and friends. And together they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1923.

Mr. Appeldorn was taken from her by death in 1929. Since that time she has lived in her Paullina home with her two daughters, spending several of the recent winters in California.

She enjoyed good health for her advanced age, and found great enjoyment in the company of her family of children, ten of whom she has helped to celebrate their sliver wedding anniversaries. The most enjoyable of all her pastimes was Knitting, and hours of her days were spent in making beautiful lace for her children and friends. She took special interest in the work of the Presbyterian Church, with which she and her husband united in 1915. It was her privilege to partake of the Lord's Supper on the Sunday preceding her death. And only three weeks ago her entire family were present for her eighty-fifth birthday anniversary.

Death came to her In sleep on October 11, 1940, and she was called from a long life of rich usefulness to a fuller life above.
