Mr. Strictland, beloved husband and father, passed on of natural causes.

He was born in Ozark, Alaska., the son of Hardy O. and Susie F. Strickland, he worked in farming, carpentry and storekeeping while growing up in Ewell, Ala., also serving with the Civilian Conservation Corps and the Alabama National Guard. After graduating from high school in 1940, he entered the U.S. Army and served stateside during World War II.

After the war, he worked for Strickland's Shoe Store in Tallahassee, Fla., before reenlisting in the U.S. Air Force in 1956. During his 21 years of service, he served both stateside and abroad, with tours of duty in Greenland, Manitoba, Vietnam and Okinawa. In the course of his military career, he rose to the rank of Chief Master Sergeant and received numerous accolades for his achievements, including the Bronze Star Medal for his efforts during the Vietnam conflict.

Upon retiring from the Air Force in 1977, he worked as an auditor for the Defense Contract Audit Agency at Bath Iron Works, where he also received multiple awards for outstanding performance before retiring for good in 1990. Throughout both careers, he pursued a college education, obtaining a B.A. in accounting in 1974, and a master of business administration in 1982 at the age of 60. He kept busy after retirement with his interests in reading, poetry and genealogy.

Also while in the Air Force, he met his wife of 46 years, Shirley Goss. They married in 1960, and had two sons, Donald and Jeffrey, and a stepdaughter, Pamela Hudson. Throughout his life, he was dedicated to his family, spending all of his free time with them.

After moving to Mechanic Falls in 1977, he started a Boy Scout troop and served as Scoutmaster. He was also an active member of the First Congregational Church of Mechanic Falls, serving as a moderator and a trustee. Additionally, he was a Master Mason at Tyrian Lodge in Mechanic Falls, and a member of American Legion Post 150.

He will be remembered for his kind and generous nature, his sense of humor, and his love of laughter, children, dogs and all creatures. He was a wonderful husband and father, and an inspiring role model for his sons.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley E. Strickland of Mechanic Falls; son, Jeffrey P. Strickland, J.D., of Portland, son, Donald J. Strickland, M.D., of Gardiner, his wife, Dorothy, and their daughter, Susie; stepdaughter, Pamela J. Luchenbaugh of York, Pa. and her daughters, Julianne Rosier and Jamie Raffensberger, also of Pennsylvania; a sister, Chellie Christmas of Dothan, Ala.; and many nieces and nephews.

Interment was with military honors at the New Maine Veterans' Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta. Charitable contributions in his memory may be made to the Air Force Sergeant's Association Scholarship Program, 5211 Auth Road, Suitland, MD 20746
