He was educated in Lewiston schools and graduated from Roberts Business College in Lewiston.
He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Army in the European Theater of Operations where he served in the Fifth Armored Division.
He worked at Bath Iron Works before the war, at the American Bobbin Co., and Philips Elmet Co. and was retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 20 years of service until 1982. He was a member of Saints Peter and Paul Parish, the Holy Name Society, the Legion of Mary where he served as vice president and president, the American Legion Post 22 of Lewiston, and a life-member of the Disabled American Veterans, American Hamman Chapter, member of the Fifth Armored Division Association and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, where he served as chaplain.
He is survived by his wife, the former Helene Cloutier of Lewiston, whom he married May 18, 1946; two daughters, Mrs. Gerald (Helene) Maraghy of York, and Mrs. Armand (Rose) Girard of Sabattus; two sons, Gilbert J. Lapointe Jr. of Hampton, VA., and Leo R. Lapointe of Pepperell, MA., and four grandsons, Christopher and Michael Maraghy and George and Michael Lapointe. He was predeceased by a grandson Jason Ryan Lapointe.
