Andrea Kathryn Hauer unexpectedly passed away on Friday, July 31, 2015, as a result of a brain hemorrhage. Her body has been cremated according to her wishes. A memorial celebration of her life is will be held at the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden on Tuesday, August 25th from 4:30-6:30 PM.

Andrea was a brilliant and witty individual who had an insatiable quest for knowledge and rich experiences. She had a curiosity about the urban community and how to make it a more vibrant and interesting place in which to work, live and flourish. She was also an eclectic gardener, historian, lover of cats, environmental activist, literary scholar, and connoisseur of fine foods and travel.

Andrea was Assistant Director of the Dept. of Urban Development and more recently Economic Development Coordinator in the Office of the City Manager for the City of Des Moines, IA for nearly 31 years. Prior to coming to Des Moines, Andrea was Urban Renewal Coordinator for the City of Iowa City, IA from 1980 to 1984. Andrea was an expert in urban revitalization law and financing and created financing packages for many urban redevelopments in downtown Des Moines. These included the 801 Grand Building, the EMC Headquarters Building, The Western Gateway, World Food Prize, the Iowa Events Center, the Science Center of Des Moines and the Des Moines Building, among others. She was also involved in the planning, project management and historic preservation of many other buildings in downtown Des Moines and the East Village.

Andrea was born in Johnstown, PA, the older of two children of Ellen Baum Hauer and Charles Edward Hauer. Her parents and sister, Carolyn (Leggett), preceded her in death. She is survived by: her husband, David Perret of Des Moines; brother-in-law, Steve Leggett of Culpepper, VA; aunts and uncles, Allan and Wendy Hauer, from Albuquerque, NM, and Denny and Alice O'Geary, from Houston, TX; her brothers- and sisters-in-law, Peter Perret and Debra (Skeen) Perret of Clemmons, NC, Paul Perret and Mary Ann Hurlimann of Menlo Park, CA, Georgiane Perret of Iowa City, IA, and Ford Parkes of Las Cruces, NM, Nick Perret of Beijing, China, and Samos, Greece and Mercedes Costoyas of Iowa City, IA, Philip Perret of Katonah, NY, and Henni Hahn of Evanston, IL; and numerous dear nephews, nieces, cousins, and other relatives; and a wide circle of friends and coworkers.

Andrea's education included a B.S., with honors, in Geography in 1978, and an M.A. in Geography in 1980, from The University of Iowa. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. In 2007, she was awarded a post-graduate degree in the Advanced Management Development Program from Harvard University's Graduate School of Design. Andrea was certified by the American Institute of Certified Planners and was a Professional Associate with the American Institute of Architects. She also was a member of the Association of American Geographers, the Iowa Chapter of the American Planning Association, and the Urban Land Institute.

The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Des Moines Public Library Foundation, 1000 Grand Avenue, Des Moines, IA 50309 for books, music CDs, and garden benches, and to The Seed Savers Exchange, 3094 North Winn Rd., Decorah, IA 52101.
