George was the oldest child of Leon Edward and Frances E. Williams Martin, born in 1915. Siblings were: Dorothy F. Martin Braithwaite - 1917, William Robert - 1921, Shirley E. Martin Everman - 1924, and Helen ("Bae") L. Martin Brown - 1926. George learned the line-o-type machine used in newspaper production, and he worked for many newspapers, including the Galesburg (IL) Register-Mail, and Peoria (IL) Journal Star. He married Minnie E. Gullion on June 23, 1940, and they had three children: Brenda Lou Martin Morgan - 1941, James Robert Martin - 1943, and Bonnie Jean Martin Palmer - 1946. George was inducted into the US Army in early 1944 and served in WWII in the Persian Gulf Command in Tehran, Iran, until the end of the war. The Martin family lived in Muscatine, IA, for a few years, then moved to Altona, IL. In 1956 they moved to Peoria, IL. George enjoyed music, having played the Baritone horn in school. He also was skilled in gardening, and loved to read. George left this world at the age of 50, and is buried at Swan Lake memorial gardens in Peoria, IL, next to his wife Minnie, who died in 1983.
