Vernon Richard Blake (1899-1982). Vern was born near Drayton, Pembina County, ND on June-19-1899. He was the son of Richard Henry Blake (1860-1936) and Angelique Frederick (1877-1958) My grandfather was one of fourteen children, and raised in Northern MN, in a dirt floor cabin. He spent his youth hunting and fishing, and later played semi-pro ball as a pitcher for the Minneapolis Millers. He served overseas during WWI. He and my grandmother Anna Thompson-Blake were married at Grand Forks, North Dakota on 23-January-1925. Vern and Anna had two children, Wanda Blake-Yerbury (1926-2018) and Duane Vernon Blake (1935-1977). In 1942, the family left Minnesota, and relocated to the West coast, where they worked in the Ship Yards during WWII. In 1944 Vern and Anna moved to Tacoma, Wa. After the war, he began working at Fort Lewis, where he eventually became the head automotive mechanic Supervisor. He never lost his love of hunting and fishing, and always had a fine vegetable garden. My grandparents as long as can remember, always returned yearly to North Dakota, and Minnesota. A humble and well respected man, he will always be remembered as a quiet and reserved individual, but always showed his love for his family.
