Genuine, affectionate, hearty, earthy, simple, generous, pet-loving, pistol-packing - these are some of the words and terms that describe Joyce Acton.
Joyce Acton was born to Ray and Hortense Acton in Winkelman, AZ. She was the sixth child in a family of 13 children, 10 of whom lived to adulthood.
As a child Joyce lived on the Acton Ranch near Mammoth, AZ. Later the family lived in Oracle, AZ, and by 1941 in Tucson, AZ. In Tucson Joyce attended Tucson High School. In 1948 she and her tennis partner Elizabeth Holbrook won the girls' tennis doubles state championship for the Badgers. Joyce loved tennis and was a lifelong follower of the sport.
Joyce earned 30 years of government service through a stint in the US Navy, then as a civilian Navy employee, and finally with twelve years as an inspector for U.S. Customs in Nogales, AZ.
In her adult life, she lived primarily in the San Fernando area of Los Angeles, CA, and in Tubac, AZ, with her beloved sister Tommy.
Joyce had a family in two parts: her Acton siblings and their families, and her many pets. She was adored by both groups. For Joyce, her pets were her children, and she treated them so.
In her last years Joyce lived at The Villas at La Canada in the northwest foothills area of Tucson. On Sunday night, August 2, 2015, she died quietly and peacefully. At her side, fittingly, was her last pet, her great friend, the rescue dog Dotty.
Joyce is survived by four brothers and a sister. She is sorely missed by all her family.
