Mother of Saint Dominic of Guzmán, Founder of the Order of Preachers, Juana Garcés came from Castilla la Vieja, the earliest biography of Dominic, authored by Blessed Jordan of Saxony does not given the parents' names, but narrates the story that before the child's birth, his mother dreamed that a dog leapt from her womb carrying a torch in its mouth and set the world aflame. A later source, still of the 13th century, gives the names of Dominic's mother and father as Juana and Felix.

Nothing is known of her childhood, but she probably married when very young, as was customary in that period. Mothering four sons and a daughter, when the two older boys were grown, she went to the abbey church at Silos to pray for another son. There she is said to have had a dream in which St. Dominic of Silos told her that she would have a son, who would be a shining light to the Church. She decided to name the child Dominic after the named Saint Dominic of Silas whose nearby shrine was a favorite of hers.

Passing away in 1202, she was laid to rest in the parish of San Sebastian de Caleruega. Her remains are now deposited in the church of San Pablo of Peñafiel. Pope Leo XII beatified her on October 1, 1821 with her liturgical feast day held on August 2.
