"The LaFayette Sun" - December 23, 1914:

Death of Cap Erwin.

The death on last Sunday of Cap Erwin, age 83, one of the oldest Negro residents of LaFayette, removes another of the links connecting the present with the war times. Cap was a servant of the family of Col. Erwin, and was a trusted one too. For many years Cap conducted a restaurant here and many a hungry person has he fed. He was a hard working man, courteous, polite and always cheerful. He was a friend of the white people and they of him. A few years ago age began to tell on him and his health failing he quit his usual haunts about the town and retired to his home in the edge of town where he lingered on, suffering much and when the summons came to him last Sunday doubtless his soul went to its Maker where rest is found. Peace to the ashes of this faithful old colored man who proved faithful in life. The funeral was held yesterday afternoon and a large number of people followed his body to the silent city of the dead.
