Vogel, Leonard B.

Leonard B. Vogel, age 91, a Manitowoc resident, died early Thursday morning, August 13, 2015 at his residence.

Leonard was born on the family dairy farm in Newton, WI on January 15, 1924 son of the late Richard L. and Anna Marie Geiger Vogel. He was a graduate of St. Joseph Catholic Grade School in Alverno with the class of 1938. He then was a graduate of Manitowoc Lincoln High with the class of 1942 and went on to receive his accounting degree from the International Accounting School in Chicago.

On July 15, 1950 Leonard married the former Margaret Crowley at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Monona, WI. She preceded him in death on September 29, 2014. Leonard served his country by volunteering for the United States Navy from 1944 until 1946 in active service, and from 1946 until 1951 in the Naval Reserve. After boot camp at Great Lakes Naval Station, Leonard was assigned to the USS Burias (AG-69) in early March 1944. The Burias received orders to join Service Squadron (ServRon) 10 stationed in Saipan in the Mariana Island. The Burias worked in conjunction with the USS Hecter and USS Luzon making hull and electronic repairs to warships during the bloody Iwo Jima and Okinawa campaigns. Yeoman 2nd Class Vogel was the noncommissioned officer in charge of decommissioning the ship in Bremerton Washington after the war. Leonard was brought up on the family farm in Newton and returned home after his service to his country at the end of World War II. He then began his employment with A.H. Stock Mfg. Corp. Of Newton, where he managed the office and held the position of Accountant and Secretary/Treasurer. Leonard served for 14 years on various bank boards in the area. He was also a member of the Capitol Civic Center, Travelers Protection Association, Wisconsin Historical Society, as well as the Manitowoc Lincoln Park Zoological Society. Leonard was also a member of the board of directors and served on the finance committee at Silver Lake College for 12 years, the American Cancer Society board, the Manitowoc County taxpayers board, and the Serra Club of Manitowoc where he served two terms as president and trustee. Leonard was a life member of the Knights of Columbus 3rd degree, life member of Manitowoc Yacht Club, Eagles #706, Elks Club, and the VFW Otto-Oas Post #659 and was also a charter member of the Newton Fire Fighters. He also served as trustee/treasurer at the former St. Paul Parish of Manitowoc for 16 years and also served on the fiancé committee. Leonard currently was a communion distributor at St. Francis of Assisi on Grand, and volunteered at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center as a communion distributor. Len and Marge enjoyed their travels with their motorhome in the summer to Bailey's Grove RV Park in Door County, Wisconsin. During the winter months, on their way to Tucson, Arizona, they would visit with their son Patrick and family in St. Peters, Missouri, and then on to Arizona to spent the rest of the winter with their other son Michael and family. Leonard and Marge also enjoyed their many travels to Europe and Ireland, especially a trip to the Vatican in Rome, Italy, with the Serra International Convention for an audience with Pope John Paul II in 1983. The couple continued on to Naples, the Isle of Capri, and Pompey. Leonard was a longtime season holder of the Green Bay Packers and enjoyed every game. In September of 2009, Len attended a World War II Veterans trip with the Stars and Stripes Honor Flight to visit the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Survivors include two sons and one daughter-in-law: Patrick G. and Beth Vogel, St. Peters, MO; and Michael Vogel and his fiancée Tracy Wood, Tucson, AZ; four grandchildren: Daniel Patrick Vogel, Lyndsie Marie Vogel, Ashley Margaret Ann, and Michael Thomas Vogel; one brother and sister-in-law: Richard and Hedy Vogel, Green Bay; two sisters and one brother-in-law: Anna and Richard Jilot, Green Bay, and Elaine Martin, Plainview; two sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law: Mary and Jerome Meyer, Green Bay, Rose Crowley, Rochester, MN.

Leonard was preceded in death by four sisters and five brothers-in-law: LaVerne and Arnold Stock, Beatrice and Al Settle, Henry Katzberg, Emma and Fred Meyer, Irene and Reinhardt Staudinger; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law: Lucille and Thomas Peck; three brothers-in-law: Michael & Jerome Crowley, William Martin and an infant brother and sister: Elroy and Maria.

Funeral Services will be held at 12:00 noon on Thursday, August 20, 2015 at St. Francis of Assisi on Grand (1416 Grand Avenue), Manitowoc. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Richard Klingeisen. Immediately following the funeral service, military rites will be accorded by V.F.W. Otto Oas Post #659. Entombment will follow at Knollwood Mausoleum, town of Kossuth.

The family will greet relatives and friends at The Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 19, 2015, where a prayer service will conclude the visitation at 7:00 p.m. led by Deacon Rich Bahnaman. There will be no visitation prior to the funeral at church.

The Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
