David LeRoy McKenzie was born in Eureka, Montana on 16 March 1933, the eldest son of Charles LeRoy and Lucy Jean (Carter) McKenzie.

Dave attended elementary schools in Montana and Oregon, and graduated from Taft High School on the Oregon coast in 1951. He was a four-year letterman in baseball as a right-handed pitcher with a talent exceptional enough to attract major league scouts during those high school years. Upon graduation he earned a baseball scholarship at Oregon State University, but after one year, decided to join the U.S. Navy. Then, while on leave following his basic training, he married his high school sweetheart in Portland on 26 August 1952. This marriage produced five children, and lasted 62 years until his death.

During his four years in the Navy, Dave developed considerable skills in sales to supplement his military income, and this provided him with the basis for his career as a hearing aid specialist. Early on, he became the West Coast representative for AudioTone Hearing Aids, and eventually he established the Oregon Hearing Aid Center, which he operated as the owner for many years.

He was an active lifetime sportsman enjoying fishing, hunting, golf and handball among other pleasures, including spicy Thai food and gospel music. He enjoyed travel and spending time with family and friends. He was also a long-time fan and season ticket holder with the Portland Trailblazers.

Dave crossed over in Salem, Oregon on 25 March 2015, nine days after his 82nd birthday. He was preceded in death by two infant sons, John and Joseph, and was buried near them.
