Alexander MacDonald and his wife Catherine MacDonald emigrated to Prince Edward Island in 1841 with their family. They arrived on the ship " Washington " from Liverpool, England. Their son John (1826 • Kilmuir, Isle of Skye) fought in the US Civil War and never returned home.

His family was always known in the Bellevue area as the Spreck MacDonald's. Spreck cames from the Gaelic word Breac - trout or the spotted one; meaning Alexander had suffered from small-pox. Breac was transformed into Spreck.

Alexander's parents are unknown.
