George Stockweather, father of Former Assemblyman A. Grant Stockweather, born in Angelica 90 years ago, died at his home at Hunt, N.Y., Thursday March 5, 1936. Two other sons, Bert S. of Dalton and Floyd of Hornell, survive, with one daughter, Mrs. Mae Miller of Pine Bluff, N.C., 12 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
One of the few remaining veterans of the Civil War, George Stockweather was widely known thruout this section. He was 18 years of age when he enlisted in 1863 with the First New York Dragoons at Buffalo. He was mustered in as a private in Company F, in January, 1864, and five months later was wounded at Trevilian, Va., and captured by the Confederates. He was mustered out with his company June 30, 1865, at Clouds Mills, Va., and for a number of years thereafter was engaged in the lumber business in Pennsylvania, later purchasing a farm in the town of Portage, where he resided until the time of his death.
Funeral services were conducted at Hunt Baptist church Monday at 1 p.m., Rev. Dwight Platten of the LaGrange Baptist church officiating, and interment was made in the Short Tract cemetery.
