James was born on October 12, 1933 in Mellette, Oklahoma the son of Ambris Lee and Virgie Beulah (Locke) Davis. He attended school at Shell Creek and East Liberty. He worked in Arizona at many cotton gins and later worked for McIntosh County in Oklahoma for six years. James also ran his own custom hay baling business. On November 12, 1952, James married Coreina Lois Mooring in Eufaula. He loved anything to do with his cattle, horses and family. In 1976 James and his son Doc rode on horseback across Oklahoma as bicentennial riders. James was called any time anyone needed any cattle wrangled. He would load up his horses and dogs and would be there and have the cattle rounded up in no time. When it became too difficult to jump up on his horses, he rode his tractor and kept several acres of fresh vegetables planted in the ground for his family and friends. James was a member of the Hanna Church of Christ.
