FOSTERBURG - Amos Chalengsworth, 71, former operator of coal mines in Fosterburg vicinity, died at 2:45 Monday afternoon at his home here. His death was due to a heart attack.

Chalengsworth had been ill for several weeks of influenza, but had recovered sufficiently to be up and about the house.

He was a native of Fosterburg, being the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Chalengsworth, who came to the United States from Staffordshire, England. A number of years ago, he operated the Weber Coal Mine and later another on the Russell Baker farm. In the late years, he was well-known for his knowledge of the coal aralia in the Fosterburg vicinity and was frequently consulted by others who wished to open mines.

He is survived by one son, Justice of the Peace Harvey Chalengsworth, a granddaughter, Mrs. Dorothy Barcelona, of Alton and a step-grand-daughter, Shirley Radamacher, of Fosterburg.

Funeral rites will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Fosterburg Baptist Church by the Rev. D.C. Blunt. Burial will be in the Fosterburg cemetery.

The body will be brought to the home from the Morrow-Culforth Funeral Home at Alton at 4 p.m. today.
