Golden, Ill., Feb. 26--- Saturday evening about 9 o'clock, death came to one of this community's old and prominent citizens, William Carlin, a retired farmer, in his 75th year. He had been in failing health for about a year, having suffered several slight strokes of apoplexy. The last and what proved to be the fatal attack, came to him last week, when he was stricken on the sidewalk and fell, rolling into the ditch along the walk. He was carried into the house, where he failed steadily until death came as a welcome release. William Carlin was born in Hereford, Maryland, the son of Josiah and Elizabeth Carlin, on Oct. 18, 1837. Jan 20, 1858, he was married to Delilah Slade, also of Maryland, a sister to the late Abraham and Crayton Slade, of this county. In 1869 the family came to Illinois and settled in Adams county, first locating near Columbus. There the first Mrs. Carlin died in 1870,and is laid to rest in Burton cemetery. Mr. Carlin then removed, in the same year, to the farm in Clayton township, near camp Point and Golden, which was destined to be his home for many years. To his first marriage were born five children, of whom one, Ella May, died in childhood. The four surviving are Mrs. A.H. Bartholomew, of Bowen; J.W. and T.S. of Golden, and George H. of Lewistown, Ill. Sept 19 1871, Mr. Carlin married Miss Matilda Lyon, a native of Pennsylvania. to this union were born eight children, three of them surviving, as follows: Harry W. of Jacksonville; William F., of the Quincy Post office, and Mrs. Rezin M. Beckett of Camp Point. In 1907 Mr. Carlin retired from active farm life, and with his family removed to the village of Golden. There Mrs. Carlin passed away, April 7, 1908. Despite the dreary February sleet,a large conconcource of friends and old neighbors followed the remains to their last resting place, and paid a last tribute to esteem to an honored citizen.
