John Louis Devaux was living in St. Mary's County with his brother-in-law George W. L. Hill in the 1900 Census. It is noted his father was born in France and his mother in Maryland.

He married Ruth Elizabeth Wallace about 1909 in St. Mary's County.
He was an oyster man at the time of the 1910 Census.

By the 1920 Census, the family had moved to Baltimore City, where he worked in a shipyard.

Their children included John Louis, Mary Elizabeth, John William, Ruth Eva, Frances Loretta, Cora B., Wallace Anthony, Catherine Elsie, Magdalene Roberta, Thomas Edward, Andrew G., Genevieve Agnes and Bernard Jerome Devaux.

His obituary notes he was the husband of the late Ruth E. DeVaux and father of Lewis DeVaux. No mention of any of the other children.
He was interred at Holy Redeemer on Fri, Jan 21.
