Staff Sgt. Privette of Zebulon, North Carolina was a 1994 graduate of Selma-Smithfield High School. She joined the Marine Corps Aug. 1, 1994, and returned from Operation Iraqi Freedom in September. "We train the way we fight." A popular mantra amongst Marines, it underscores a mentality that prepares military units and personnel for the challenges and difficult truths of war. Lori was killed in a UH-1N Huey crash. She was the helicopter's crew chief. Lori had returned from Iraq in September. She is survived by her parents. Lori's family planted a memorial garden at her home in Zebulon. Those who desired were encouraged to bring flower bulbs or flower seeds which would grow in Lori's garden to honor her memory. She was buried with a full military funeral in San Diego next to her husband, Sgt. Robert J. Petty a Marine who died of cancer just days after they were married. She was 27.
